Ground Beef Lo Mein
Quick, Savory, and Weeknight-Ready
This easy lo mein brings all the comfort of takeout—chewy noodles, tender veggies, and a glossy, flavorful sauce—without the wait. With ground beef for speed and a balanced stir-fry sauce, dinner’s ready in under 30 minutes.
Ingredients
- 12 oz lo mein noodles or spaghetti
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 tbsp vegetable or sesame oil, divided
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup carrots, julienned
- 2 cups shredded cabbage or coleslaw mix
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 3 green onions, chopped (reserve some for garnish)
- ⅓ cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 2 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce (or extra soy sauce)
- 2 tsp toasted sesame oil
- 1 tbsp brown sugar or honey
- ¼ cup beef broth or water
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp cornstarch
Instructions
- Cook Noodles Boil until al dente. Drain and rinse under cold water. Set aside.
- Brown Beef Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large pan. Cook beef 5–6 minutes until browned. Drain fat and set aside.
- Sauté Veggies Add remaining oil. Stir-fry onion, garlic, carrots, cabbage, and bell pepper for 4–5 minutes until tender-crisp.
- Make Sauce Whisk soy, oyster, hoisin, sesame oil, sugar, broth, pepper, and cornstarch until smooth.
- Combine & Toss Return beef to pan. Add noodles and sauce. Toss 2–3 minutes until glossy. Fold in most green onions.
- Finish & Serve Adjust seasoning. Garnish with remaining green onions. Serve hot.
Tips & Variations
- Use a wide pan and high heat for true stir-fry flavor
- Swap beef for turkey, chicken, or tofu
- Add heat with chili crisp or sriracha
- Stir in grated ginger for extra depth
- Finish with rice vinegar or lime juice for brightness
