Nova Scotia Blueberry Cream Cake: Your Slice of Coastal Heaven

Indulge in the perfect harmony of tender cake, juicy wild blueberries, and luscious cream  cheese swirls with this Nova Scotia-inspired dessert. Simple to make yet unforgettable in flavor, this cake is a celebration of local ingredients and homemade comfort.

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ cup whole milk

  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

  • 1 ½ – 2 cups Nova Scotia wild blueberries (fresh or frozen, unthawed)

  • 1 tbsp flour (for tossing blueberries, if using frozen)

For the Cream Cheese Swirl:

  • 8 oz (225g) cream cheese, softened

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg yolk

  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

    Instructions

    1. Prep & Preheat

    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

    • Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or springform pan.

    2. Mix Dry Ingredients

In a medium bowl, whisk together:

    • 1 ½ cups flour

    • 1 cup sugar

    • 2 tsp baking powder

    • ¼ tsp salt

    3. Combine Wet Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk until smooth:

    • ½ cup melted butter

    • 1 egg

    • ½ cup milk

    • 1 tsp vanilla

    4. Blend Batter

    • Gently fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just combined (do not overmix).

    • If using frozen blueberries, toss them in 1 tbsp flour to prevent sinking.

    • Fold blueberries into batter, then pour into prepared pan.

    5. Make Cream Cheese Swirl

    • Beat cream  cheese until smooth.

    • Add ¼ cup sugar, egg yolk, and 1 tsp vanilla, mixing until  creamy.

    • Drop spoonfuls over batter, then swirl gently with a knife.

    6. Bake to Perfection

    • Bake 40-50 minutes, until golden and a skewer comes out with moist crumbs.

    • Let cool 30+ minutes in pan before slicing (best served at room temperature).

    Tips for Success

    • Fresh vs. Frozen Berries: Frozen work great—just keep them unthawed to avoid excess moisture.

    • Don’t Overmix: A few lumps in the batter ensure a tender crumb.

    • Swirl Lightly: Overmixing the cream layer can make it disappear into the cake.

Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar or a dollop of whipped cream for extra decadence. Each bite is a burst of sweet-tart blueberries and velvety cream—a true taste of Nova Scotia’s rustic charm.

Enjoy your slice of coastal heaven! 🌊🍰
