Dry Ingredients:
1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp salt
½ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground cardamom (optional, for traditional flavor)
Wet Ingredients:
½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp milk
Filling & Topping:
2 large firm apples (e.g., Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and thinly sliced
Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
Optional Enhancements:
Topping: Sliced almonds, brown sugar, or extra cinnamon
Serving: Whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or caramel drizzle
Mix-ins: ¼ cup raisins or chopped walnuts
Instructions
Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or springform pan.
Dry Mix: Whisk flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom in a bowl. Set aside.
Cream Butter & Sugar: In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
Combine: Alternate mixing dry ingredients and milk into the wet mix until smooth (do not overmix).
Layer: Spread half the batter in the pan. Arrange half the apples evenly. Repeat with remaining batter and apples. (For flair, fan apple slices on top.)
Bake: 40–50 minutes, until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool & Serve: Let rest 15 minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar.
Tips for Success
Apples: Use firm varieties to prevent mushiness.
Batter: Room-temperature ingredients blend easier.
Texture: Cool slightly before slicing for cleaner cuts.
