Vintage Candied Apples

A vibrant and easy retro treat! Sliced apples bake in a glossy, cinnamon-spiced syrup made from Red Hots candies, resulting in a dessert that's as delicious as it is colorful. Perfect warm over ice cream or chilled as a unique side dish.

Yield: 6-8 servings
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 6-8 apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced

  • 1 (5.5 oz) box Red Hots cinnamon candies

  • 1 ½ cups water

  • Optional for serving: Vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Peel, core, and slice the apples into even slices, about ½-inch thick.

  2. Assemble: Arrange the apple slices in a single layer in a 9x13-inch glass or ceramic baking dish. Evenly sprinkle the entire box of Red Hots over the apples. Gently pour the water over everything.

  3. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes. Important: Every 15 minutes, open the oven and give the apples a good stir. This helps the candies dissolve evenly and coats all the slices in the beautiful, spiced syrup.

  4. Serve: The apples are done when they are tender and coated in a thick, glossy red syrup. Serve them warm over vanilla ice cream for a classic dessert, or let them chill completely for a sweet and tangy side dish with roasted pork or chicken.

Chef's Notes

  • Stirring is Key: Don't skip stirring every 15 minutes! This ensures the Red Hots melt properly and don't just stick to the bottom of the pan.

  • Apple Variety: Firmer apples like Granny Smith hold their shape well and provide a nice tart contrast to the sweet syrup. Softer apples will become more like a sauce.

  • Make-Ahead: This dish can be made a day in advance. Store it covered in the refrigerator and serve cold or reheat gently before serving.
